Great Day, Great Evening
Beth decided to spend the 4 day week with me down here instead of staying in Carbondale two weeks alone. We left Carbondale around 6 after knocking out a few chores and eating. I was left alone today at work which allowed me to stay on task. I finished my task shortly before 5:30 and was told I did a good job before I left. That always feels good. The work I did was easy but working within the...

Hampton > Courtyard
The Hampton is a block closer to work. Surely I’ll save a few cents this week.  Breakfast is free. I don’t have to wait on an overworked server to get my check. The bed doesn’t have a pointless coverlet on it.  There is a HD television. (Same LG LCD in the Hilton Garden Inn we stayed at in May. The breakfast lady is super sweet. She gave me a box of mints this morning and...

New Job First
I have already received my first check. Words cannot explain how nice it is to not have to wait one month for some green. But words can explain how nice it is to get paid for a single week and it be very comparable to the previous checks that covered two weeks of work. I think those words would be “Saa Weeet!”

An Expected, Disappointing Day
Today was not as good as the prior three but I expected it. I was pushed out on my own to do work without being spoon fed. I looked forward to this but it wasn’t as sweet as I anticpated. There is a lack of organization that makes it difficult for me to get answers. Luckily most everyone is willing to help me. Yesterday we had a champagne toast at 5 to celebrate our latest contact signing...

Open Apartment
Our future landlord told me that she will not be able to close on the apartment on the scheduled day. This pushes our move in date back up to a week but everyone involved is really flexible. If ICA will cover another hotel stay for 2ish-6 more days then I have no worries. But I feel really guilty asking for another week when they have already given me two. A coworker told me today he was only...

Unquickie
I wasn’t crazy about leaving Carbondale last night. I wasn’t dreading the drive; I didn’t want to leave Beth for a week. I was putting off leaving so much that I cleaned my car’s dashboard even though I haven’t touched since last Fall… at best. I was only out the door 30 minutes after I had originally planned which put me in Nashville at 8:45. I’m...

Quickie
My coworkers are great. The job is great. The town is great. The pizza for lunch was decent. They didn’t give me a Mac but I do have a 24” monitor. I’ll be going back tomorrow.  I’m going for a run and will have some more detailed thoughts to share later.

The Unluckiest Town in America - TIME →
“This tiny town on Illinois’s southern tip is caught between catastrophes, literally. A dispute with the Federal Government has resulted in its loss of flood insurance — unless the impoverished town takes expensive measures, like hoisting homes and the few remaining businesses on stilts a dozen feet into the air. But if they scratch together the money to do so, it will be impossible to...

Last Day Summary
It didn’t feel like my last day. It was a cloudy and cool Friday with many people not at work. Two progammers were home hungover. The secretary and a VP recently had surgery and weren’t back. The owner and HR/sales/accounting woman were on the road. And both graphic designers took the day off. So my request of passing up the traditional good words and cake was a good one because we...

Final Lunch
7 people joined me for lunch at Great Wall. If my closest coworkers wouldn’t have been hung over and at home, we would have had two more. I was really happy to see a group go to lunch instead of just the programmers. It was way better than cake, especially on a day when many are out.

Craigslist Disappointment?
I had only heard from a few people regarding my Craiglist listings. Today I looked in my Junk folder and found a handful of replies from people. Duoh! We’ll see if they pan out.

Good News
Google Calendar has failed to import my iCal calendars for the last week. So I did a little searching and found an app named Spanning Sync which has imported my calendars. Life will not end after tomorrow. Now I need to double check that all of my Mail folders have been synced with my IMAP accounts.

Informed & Caring
I had a question for the my temporary “home” in Nashville. So I gave the hotel a buzz and spoke with Cindy. She was the achieved a perfect level of niceness and informativenessnessology. I wish every experience I had with a company was just like that phone call.

Suprise Dessert
bethneu: Every night, Tyler asks what’s for dessert? I blame this on his mom, sorry Karen. Apparently, she always had a bowl of fruit cocktail chililng in the fridge for after dinner. For once I have a dessert planned. Yep but it’s a surprise! I can’t wait!

Bagel Nomming
I swung by Panera this morning to treat my coworkers to bagels. They have been well received thus far. I suspect it could get hairy when those who arrive later will be forced to choose between the plain and blueberry breeds. I grabbed a cinnamon crunch immediately to avoid that choice.

Firefox 3 brings Ugliness to the Mac →
marco: I agree. I’m disappointed by Firefox 3’s “improved” OS X interface. It’s still not using native controls — it just tries even harder to fake them (and fails even harder). And I don’t know what they were thinking with the “awesome bar”. It’s confusing at best. So far, it has only hindered me. It’s a shame that so many programmers think that shoving more unnecessary interface elements into...
