Shower Rod
The shower rod that came with the apartment is easily the worst rod I have ever seen. It is made of metal which looks nice but its extremely thin sides have taken a handful of dents before we even moved in. The poor thing wasn’t even installed when we moved in. I attempted to stick it up there but it was cut too long to fit. So for the first two days I had to mount it above to ceramic tile which left the bottom of our shower curtain above the side of the tub. Once I got my toolbox I was able to knock 1/2” off and mount it properly.
We bought a curved, replacement rod the weekend we moved in. We also decided to upgrade to a hookless shower curtain after enjoying them so much in our month long hotel extravaganza. I decided to wait on the rod installation until we had the curtain to ensure it was installed at the correct height.
I bought a masonary drill bit last week and was ready to install the rod last night. I read up about drilling through ceramic tile to know a few tips and to take is slow. I felt prepared as I marked the holes and began drilling. I kept the drill at a slow speed and watched my pressure to prevent any cracking. As I was half way through the first hole, Beth’s Dad called back after we had called him before beginning. At this point I was just concerned about the time it was going to take to get four holes drilled. He agreed that I was definitely not going to get done on one charge of my drill’s battery. He also questioned my choice of using an 1/8” bit instead of 1/4” since I was going to be using drywall anchors. I looked at the anchors and agreed that I should be using a 1/4” bit. So I headed to Lowes to pick up a bigger & better bit than the lame one I got at Wal*Mart. I was able to finish the hole pretty quickly after that.
The second hole started really well but my drill’s battery was drained by then. So I had to leave hole number two unfinished last night and put up the old rod. Tonight I hope to get through holes 2 & 3. I knew it would take a longer time to drill through tile but not as long as it actually has taken.
Our next improvements will be some additional door stops on the hinges and a few hooks on the back of the bathroom doors.
