Life Skills: Jobs

A young friend of mine will most likely be given a job offer shortly after accepting another job. He has never had to compare jobs or keep information, like a job offer, from an employer; it feels like an immoral place to him. Making a choice for yourself may feel selfish at his age and is harder to accept until you have seen strong actions taken by companies like firing an employee without explanation or passing on a prospect after a second interview. Those decisions are made to better the company. Personal career decisions should be made with a similar mindset.

He wants to be honest with both sides during this process but I encouraged him not to do so. His current employer doesn’t need to know about the possible employer until he has planned to leave. The new employer also doesn’t need to know he is employed. The latter shouldn’t hurt anything but it is unnecessary information to share. Growing up in a small town engrains this honesty into you and I feel slightly bad for arguing the other side.

I hope my 12 piece help nuggets will assist him in making an informed decision and not closing a door before ample thought has taken place.
