Memories of Opryland USA
I’ve been watching a documentary about the Opryland USA theme park (1972 - 1997) that was in Nashville. I get a sick feeling in my stomach during every visit to Opry Mills, the mall that stands on the parks site, and think about the park getting ripped out.
The show is pretty light on details about the history of the park and mostly comprised of former employees and guests. There hasn’t been any talk of roller coasters. Booo!
It is a shame that a park that pulled 1.2 million in its first year and over 40 million in its lifetime had its plug pulled.
They’re now showing the rides, but not before they break for a chance to beg for money.
The guy that runs http://thrillhunter.com has been providing a lot of commentary and is surprisingly not too geeky. The segment lacked anything too geeky for me to enjoy.
I was at the park once during a family vacation with my family. I remember watching Charlie Daniels perform, the Hangman SLC, my sister and mother riding the flume twice because they weren’t stopped in the station, and me being too chicken to ride anything.
