2012 Bicycle Commute Count
1
Today I rode the bus to work, my first bus ride in Nashville. I had to walk 15 minutes (0.7 miles, 33% of my commute distance) to West End from Sylvan Park. The distance is great enough to make me question the benefits of the bus. Instead of walking 15 minutes and then waiting another 15, I could walk 30 and see my building.
I don’t know what my bus use case is. I’m not going to want to stand outside 15-30 minutes if it is raining. I might as well bike in at that point. I also don’t know if the bus saves me money since my commute is so short.
I also rode my bike to the car dealership and then drove my car home. My next goal is to try a plane and boat in the same day.

Happys
- Nolan sitting up unassisted
- My parents helping Beth & I hang make our house livable.
- Fishbowls of Yazoo Dos Peros at Gerst Haus
- Riding my bicycle to work
- Wearing sweaters
- Not breaking a sweat while biking to work in a sweater
- Completing our latest sprint
- Nolan being more vocal & social
- Not carrying groceries up three stories
Weekend
- We watched Couples Retreat and it wasn’t that bad. It made me want to Bora Bora until I learned how much that would cost.
- I spent a morning on my bicycle knocking out 20 casual miles though many neighborhoods with bike lanes.
- I continued patching holes and sanding our walls in preparation for our move.
- Nolan rolled over!
- We saw Nicole Kidman in church. Her ability to do such a thing without fuss makes me so proud of Nashville.
- I made pita bread. It was yummy even if it didn’t puff up.
Nashville Bicycle Lounge is king at making me feel guilty when I’m not riding my bike. Here is a Facebook post from Sunday.
if you’re not out riding the bicycle gods may never smile on you again. the heat is down and you have no excuses. ANTI-LAZY SUNDAY!
It wasn’t long after that when I left for a casual 10 mile ride down Charlotte, through Sylvan Park, and up West End. The new bike lanes on Charlotte and existing lanes on 46th/Murphy make me happy. This was also a scouting mission to see how my future 2-wheel commute will be.
The highlight of my hour out was the new asshole parking spots on Murphy. ;-)

It’s painful to ride parallel to a sidewalk cyclist whilst riding in a new bike lane.

secret republic: The Real Reason Why Bicycles are the Key to Better Cities
We all know the talking points. The benefits of bicycles have been tirelessly elaborated upon; bicycles improve health, ease congestion, save money, use less space, and provide efficient transportation with zero fuel consumption and zero carbon emissions. All of this is great, and the…
You’re gonna get run over.
A Rosa L. Parks Blvd jaywalker told me this as I passed by him this morning.
There are too many people that don’t know bicycles can and should be on the road. Convincing them that it can be more dangerous to ride a bicycle on a sidewalk is a very difficult task that I don’t believe will be complete until there are more visible riders. If they add bike lanes to Rosa L. Parks like some want then this guy wouldn’t have batted an eye.
If you think your bike looks good, it does. If you like the way your bike rides, it’s an awesome bike. You don’t need to spend a million dollars to have a great bike, but if you do spend a million dollars and know what you want you’ll probably also have a great bike. Yes, you can tour on your bike – whatever it is. Yes, you can race on your bike – whatever it is. Yes, you can commute on your bike – whatever it is.
Surly: Some answers to just about any bike forum post I’ve ever read
I get jealous of fast bikes & bright jerseys. This post reminded me that all is good if I’m having fun.
