GPOYW - Nashville Snow Edition
Where are the snow plows?
Beth & I ventured out yesterday for lunch and grocery shopping. The side roads, espcially ours, were still covered in ice/snow. The main roads in town were passable but not as clear as I expected. The biggest surprise while driving was seeing the interstates with stacks of snow and slush on them. I would have thought that they would have been a high priority. It’s possible they were attended afterwards but I’m doubting it after hearing the traffic report this morning.
Davidson and Williamson county schools are closed. Beth’s school opened 2 hours hate which I thought was a good move. But they are also closing early which boggles my mind.
I need to buy a shovel and make a shit load of money when the next big snow falls in 7 years. I saw a handful of people trying to shovel ice away this morning. If they had moved the slush before it refreezed then they wouldn’t look like a fool on the sidewalks. Don’t get me started on the dumbasses spreading salt on top of inches of ice under the Renaissance.
Snow Walk
Beth & I walked to (and up) Capitol Hill today. The roads aren’t plowed but we did see one plow on our way back. I think we have around 5 inches on the ground. All of my photos are on Flickr.

Yet More Snow Talk
I’m not certain what the original Nashville forecast was earlier this week. It was the consensus of many the meteorologists were playing it cool because their last snow prediction weeks ago was very wrong.
It started snowing this morning and should have accumulated to 4” by 7 pm. We will have another 4” tonight. This is all according to the WSMV at 5pm.
Employees were allowed to leave this morning but the development team stuck it out. I left at a good stopping point at 4pm. The drive had the potential to be bad but I took it easy as the other few drivers out did as well. Once I got home I grabbed Beth & an empty growler for a short drive to Yazoo to fill up on Sly Rye Porter, a beer I have been interested in trying. While getting my fill I dropped my debit card in a man’s crotch. Awkward. I’m looking forward to their new tap room in The Gulch.
I’m looking forward to getting outside tomorrow with my camera. I’m not sure where I’ll go but Nashville in 8” of show is rare. I heard tonight on the news that we usually get 9” all season.
I’m amused by all the talk and drama from the weather but I am also mindful of my travel plans next weekend.
Final Winter Thoughts
I hate to harp on Nashville over and over but I have a few final thoughts.
- The term “black ice” is used too often here. I don’t have a good definition, yet, but I do know I hear it too much.
- The main roads have been awesome all week.
- The town is dead which makes for a great commute and an empty workplace. People have stayed home because they “can’t make it out of their subdivision or neighborhood”. It’s just ice! Unless you live in a valley and can’t make it up either side of the hill then you’re lame and should make up a proper excuse to burn PTO.
- The local news reported police officers being called out to ponds to kick kids off. They interviewed one stupid kid than claimed he tested the ice by hitting it with a hammer. He also said he had been on it all week and that it was acting the same as ice in Canada where he visited.
Barber closed!
You’re embarrassing me Nashville. Get it together!
This Just In
A snowflake drifted through the jet stream from Iowa and attempted to land near Smyrna. Avoid the area!
TDOT has responded with 6 snow plows that were able to surround the flake. They hit it with flame throwers and did melt it before it struck the ground. They are now working with a Shop Vac to remove moisture before it freezes. 33,000 metric tons of salt have also been applied in the general area as a precaution.
In other news, a freak salt storm has been reported in the parking areas and sidewalks around Dell in Nashville. Walking and driving is hazardous due to the accumulation of salt which has made walkways slippery due to its round granular shape.
best conversation ever: “tomorrow is basically a snow day in nashville” “how much snow have you gotten?” “none” “… oh.

Beth did have to work today which is no surprise because there is no snow on the ground in town. We’re supposed to get an inch by noon but even that makes me roll my eyes. I’ve seen photos of the grocery store shelves picked over. 700ish miles of roads had been salted before last night.
I miss the sane people that live in Illinois.
